Infant formula nutrient requirements and regulations have remained largely unchanged since 1985. Since the 1990s onward, a wealth of information has arisen suggesting the beneficial effects of various nutritional and non-nutritional constituents of human milk that are not universally available in all infant formulas. This session will analyze the current federal regulations governing infant formula and compare its nutritional composition to breast milk. It will focus on the latest evidence surrounding formula composition including nutritive and non-nutritive components, macronutrient composition, current questions, including differences in nutrient regulations between the United States, and Europe. Speakers will include those on Operation Stork Speed, and other experts in infant feeding and early-life nutrition.
