Despite decades of research and more than 50,000 published papers, there is still no worldwide consensus on a target intake amount for eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (EPA+DHA) omega-3s. At minimum the totality of evidence supports cardioprotective benefits of EPA and DHA omega-3s, although different participant health profiles, treatment practices and doses can make it difficult to interpret results for clinical or nutritional guidance. This underscores the need to review the literature to establish a consensus EPA+DHA intake target for adults.
This session will explore the consensus-building process that was undertaken among an expert group of scientists, biostatisticians and practitioners to establish an evidence-based EPA+DHA intake recommendation using major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) as the primary outcome. Implications for this group's work and potential future research directions will be discussed.
Defining Daily Intakes of EPA+DHA that Support Public Health awards 1.25 CPEUs in accordance with the Commission on Dietetic Registration's CPEU Prior Approval Program.
