Dr. Schalinske has been at Iowa State University since 1999 and currently has the title of Morrill Professor, a designation that recognizes faculty members whose professional work has demonstrated outstanding success in teaching and learning in undergraduate, graduate, and/or Extension/outreach programs which is reflected by a national or international reputation in the nominee's discipline. Dr. Schalinske has taught throughout the undergraduate and graduate curriculum in the department with a focus on nutritional biochemistry, molecular biology, and epigenetics. In addition to the Morrill Professor title, Dr. Schalinske has received teaching awards from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; ISU Outstanding Teaching Award; the USDA Teaching Excellence Award; and the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) Excellence in Nutrition Education Award. IN 2026, Dr. Schalinske received recognition as a Distinguished Fellow in the ASN, the highest honor that the ASN bestows.
Leadership positions include: Director of Graduate Education (Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Nutritional Sciences); President of the ISU Faculty Senate; ASN Board of Directors as Director of Research Interests Section, Secretary, and in the Presidential line; standing member of the NIH INMP study section; and panel manager for the USDA.
Dr. Schalinske’s research focuses on one-carbon metabolism and epigenetics, as well as exploring dietary intervention strategies to attenuate the obese phenotype, including regulation of endogenous miRNA expression in health and disease. Dr. Schalinske has received research funding from the NIH; USDA; American Diabetes Association; American Heart Association; American Institute for Cancer Research; Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation; United Soybean Board; Egg Nutrition Center; and the National Dairy Council. Dr. Schalinske received the ASN Outstanding Fundamental Nutrition Research Award and the Board on Human Sciences Undergraduate Research Mentor Award.
