Joe is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Geriatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). His current work uses stable isotope tracers to quantify protein turnover in a range of health and disease states. Before joining UAMS, Joe spent 9 years as a Lecturer in Sports Therapy & Nutrition at Birmingham City University and University College Birmingham in the UK, where he was awarded Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. During this period, he completed a Ph.D. at Nottingham Trent University, focusing on the roles of carnosine and beta-alanine in metabolic health. Joe is a Registered Sport and Exercise Nutritionist (UK) with over 12 years of experience working with professional athletes across mixed martial arts, boxing, cricket, rugby and football (soccer). His research and practice with combat sport athletes contributed to his role in developing the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) expert consensus statement on ‘Weight Loss in Weight-Category Sports’.
