Dr. S. M. Tafsir Hasan is an Associate Scientist and Lead, Maternal Nutrition in the Nutrition Research Division at icddr,b, Bangladesh. A physician by training with a postgraduate degree in Applied Statistics, his research focuses on maternal, adolescent, and child nutrition, gestational weight gain, food security, gut health, and the developmental origins of health and disease. He has led and contributed to epidemiological studies, clinical trials, large-scale surveys, and systematic reviews to improve maternal and child health in low-resource settings. His work has advanced understanding of the determinants and consequences of gestational weight gain, pregnancy outcomes, and the role of nutrition, microbiota, and infection in maternal health.
Dr. Hasan has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, conference abstracts, and scientific communications. He teaches Public Health Nutrition at the James P. Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University, serves on the Editorial Board of BMC Public Health, and is a member of the WHO Technical Advisory Group on Gestational Weight Gain (TAG-GWG), contributing to the development of global gestational weight gain standards. He also mentors junior researchers and collaborates extensively on international maternal, adolescent, and child nutrition research.
