Hussain is a Ph.D. student in Nutritional Biology at UC Davis, with a Designated Emphasis in Global Nutrition, working under Dr. Lauren Au. He earned his B.S. in Physiological Sciences from UCLA, where he was an undergraduate research assistant in data science for cardiovascular medicine through the NHLBI-funded iDISCOVER training program. Before returning to research he spent time teaching middle school science. His work is at the intersection of nutrition science and economics, using quasi-experimental and causal inference methods to evaluate the impact of federal food assistance programs, most notably WIC, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. His research asks questions about whether these programs actually reach the families who need them and whether they improve health outcomes for women and young children.
