Robert E. Anderson III, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Global Food Research Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research examines how food insecurity and physical activity interact to influence chronic disease risk and generates evidence to inform the design of more effective Food Is Medicine interventions. Using quantitative and qualitative methods embedded within clinical trials, his work integrates longitudinal evidence with participant perspectives to support more responsive, human-centered intervention strategies.
Dr. Anderson earned his PhD in Nutrition from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, where his dissertation examined the relationship between food insecurity and physical activity within a Food Is Medicine clinical trial. He also holds an MS in Nutrition and Food Systems from the University of Kentucky, where his research focused on metabolic compensation and compensatory feeding responses to exercise.
In addition to his research, Dr. Anderson has led statewide food systems collaborations, serving as Coordinator of the North Carolina Local Food Council's Food Waste and Recovery Working Group, where he advanced cross-sector strategies to reduce food waste and improve food recovery. He also contributes to national policy and practice initiatives through the Physical Activity Policy Research and Evaluation Network (PAPREN) Rural Hub and the workplace sector of the National Physical Activity Plan, supporting efforts to create healthier, more active communities.
