Betty Watts Endowed Professor
Florida State University
Tallahassee, Florida, United States
Dr. Nagpal is the Betty M. Watts Endowed Professor of Nutrition and Microbiome at the Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida, USA, where he directs the state-of-the-art The Gut Biome Research Lab. He has also been recognized as an Excellence in Research Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition (FASN). Dr. Nagpal earned his PhD in Food Microbiology in 2009. Subsequently, he undertook postdoctoral trainings studying the pediatric microbiome as well as the role of microbiome in host aging-associated metabolic and neurocognitive health. At FSU, his independent research program is focused on understanding the role of the gut microbiome homeostasis versus dysbiosis in host lifestyle- and aging-associated intestinal, metabolic and cognitive disorders. The long-term goals of his research are to identify beneficial and pathobiome signatures of specific gut bacteria, fungi and metabolites, and to harness this knowledge to develop novel nutritional interventions to suppress dysbiosis and foster a healthier microbiome, thereby preventing chronic diseases. Dr. Nagpal has decade-long experience in executing microbiome studies in preclinical models as well as clinical cohorts. As a researcher, he has authored >150 papers (with >14,000 citations) in his areas of research and has mentored several graduate students and postdoctoral trainees under his mentorship. He serves on the editorial board of several nutrition- and microbiome-focused journals. He is actively affiliated with several societies including the American Societies for Nutrition, the American Society for Microbiology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the US Shock Society, the International Union of Nutritional Sciences, and the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics, and has presented his research at numerous national and international scientific conferences.
