(P38-15-26) Leveraging an Individualized Nutrition Report: Opportunities to Enhance Participant Engagement and Retention

Objectives: Participants are now often viewed as partners in research. Increasingly, the personal value they receive for participation is considered during study design. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has designed individualized nutrition reports as an option available to researchers to share with participants following dietary assessments. We report the number of studies that enable the optional return of results reports using two tools, the NCI’s Automated Self-Administered 24-hour Dietary Assessment Tool (ASA24) and the Diet History Questionnaire (DHQ) a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Both ASA24 and DHQ generate a Respondent Nutrition Report (RNR) that are similar, but tool specific. DHQ also generates a Health Eating Index (HEI) Report.

Methods: Using administrative data collected by each platform, we report the number of studies that enabled available individualized nutrition reports. For ASA24-2022 and ASA24-2024, we report on the use of the RNR. For DHQ III, we report on the use of the RNR and the HEI Report.

Results: ASA24-2022 was released in August 2022 and 1,345 of 2,264 total studies (59%) enabled the RNR. ASA24-2024 was released in April 2024, and 1,675 of 2,812 (60%) total studies enabled the RNR. An RNR suited to an FFQ was made available with the release of DHQ III in 2018. Through December 2025, 2,219 of 3,196 total studies (69%) enabled the DHQ III RNR. The HEI Report only became available in June 2023. Of the 1,185 studies created since June 2023, 657 (55%) turned on the RNR, 549 (46%) turned on the HEI Report, and 536 (45%) turned on both. DHQ, an FFQ, is intended to capture long-term habitual intake, and can measure alignment with dietary recommendations. The HEI is a measure of diet quality that measures alignment with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This match between long-term intake and recommendations that are intended to be met overtime allows for the paring of HEI and DHQ, at a population level, though unproven at the individual level.

Conclusions: Over half of the studies using ASA24 or DHQ to collect dietary data are also using the individualized nutrition reports developed by NCI. The favorable usability testing described in previous publications paired with high use of the RNR and HEI Report support continued investment to understand how to leverage these tools to enhance participant engagement and retention.
