Professor Arne Astrup, MD, DMSc., served as SVP and Executive management of the Novo Nordisk Foundation in Denmark and from 2020-5, head of their Department of Obesity and Nutritional Sciences.

Dr. Astrup is the former President of the World Obesity Federation and the founding Editor-in-Chief of Obesity Reviews. He currently operates as an independent consultant and serves on twelve Boards of Directors and International Scientific Advisory Boards across the nutritional, pharmaceutical, and philanthropic sectors.

Professor Astrup’s scientific work has focused on physiology of appetite and energy regulation, and prevention and management of cardiometabolic diseases (CMD i.e. obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease). In 1996, a team led by Arne at his department, in collaboration with Professor Jens Holst, discovered that GLP 1 functions as a satiety hormone in humans. He also played a pivotal role in Denmark’s landmark 2004 decision to ban industrially produced trans fats in foods. Over the past 15 years, Arne has been a leading scientist in demonstrating that the food matrix exerts greater influence on cardiometabolic outcomes than single nutrients such as the fatty acid profile, and he has been a strong advocate for food based recommendations to prevent and manage CMD.

Professor Astrup has been a full professor since 1990, and Head of the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, University of Copenhagen, from 2012-20. Arne Astrup has published more than 1500 peer-reviewed papers and more than 1000 other academic publications. In 2018 Clarivate’s (Web of Science) named him among the most cited researchers in the world. Current H-index is 117; Google Scholar H-index is 165 with 143.000 citations. He has supervised 48 PhD students to date.

Astrup was created Knight of the Order of Dannebrog in 1999 by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, and Knight of the First Order of Dannebrog in November 2012. He was the recipient of the International Association for the Study of Obesity 2014 Willendorf Award, and the George Bray Outstanding Scientific Achievements Award in Obesity Research from The American Society for Nutrition 2024.
