Over the last twenty years dietary patterns have emerged as a core aspect of dietary guidance, influencing how questions are asked, literature is synthesized, and recommendations are given. Since 2005, the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), a standardized scoring metric to assess total diet quality, has been developed and evaluated every 5 years to align with federal dietary guidelines. As guidance has evolved, the tool has also evolved, incorporating specificity for key age groups (e.g., 12 through 23 months), and clarity regarding dietary components (e.g., fatty acids, refined grains, added sugars). This session will highlight the extensive use of the HEI, including innovative research applications (over 1,000 publications across the lifespan, at varying stages of the food environment, and incorporating different study designs); comparison with other national and international indices; and methodological advances with code now available. A panel will discuss current questions, including new elements for dietary patterns research.
